Cold calling in Limburg, Belgium: metal, logistics and family firms
Belgian Limburg is the smallest Flemish province by population, but it is industrial to the core: metalworking, logistics on the Albert Canal and a construction sector almost as large as trade. Owners still decide, and they pick up.
Belgian Limburg had 909,455 residents on 1 January 2025 and a GDP of 38.2 billion euro in 2024 (Eurostat). Manufacturing employed 45,584 people in local units in 2024, and fabricated metal products alone 9,140, more than in any other Flemish province. Construction firms are almost as numerous as shops and wholesalers.

B2B calling in Belgian Limburg means calling owners of industrial and building firms who still answer their own phone. The province had 909,455 residents on 1 January 2025, the fewest of the five Flemish provinces, and a GDP of 38.2 billion euro in 2024. Yet manufacturing employed 45,584 people in local units in 2024, according to Eurostat. Calls here are short and direct. Be clear about why you call and what you want next.
The economy of Belgian Limburg
Limburg reinvented itself twice: after the coal mines closed and again after the Ford plant in Genk shut at the end of 2014. What remains is a broad base of mid-sized manufacturers and suppliers rather than one dominant employer.
Metal is the backbone. Eurostat counts 1,080 local units making fabricated metal products, employing 9,140 people in 2024. That is more jobs in this branch than in Antwerp, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant or West Flanders. Plastics and rubber employ 3,638 people, and car and trailer production still employs 3,047 people in 66 local units, mostly suppliers.
Logistics follows the Albert Canal and the E313 towards Antwerp. Transport and storage employ 18,795 people in 1,607 local units. Staffing agencies employ 15,375, a sign of how much industrial and logistics work runs on flexible labour.
The building trade is unusually large. With 12,602 local units, construction is almost level with wholesale and retail trade (12,590), and only professional services have more establishments (14,380). Many of those are small contractors, installers and finishing firms, which makes Limburg a dense market for anyone who sells to builders: materials, equipment, software, insurance or financing.
Knowledge is concentrated in Hasselt and Diepenbeek, where Hasselt University counts 8,410 students in 2026-2027.
The chart above counts local units in Eurostat's structural business statistics for 2024. That dataset leaves out agriculture and public administration, so farms and growers are not counted in it.
Where the companies are
- Hasselt: the provincial capital, with professional services, retail, accountancy and IT firms, and the university campus in nearby Diepenbeek.
- Genk: industry and logistics on former mining and car plant sites, metalworking suppliers and industrial services.
- Beringen, Ham and Tessenderlo: logistics and distribution along the Albert Canal, plus chemicals in Tessenderlo.
- Lommel and Pelt: industry in the north of the province, close to the Dutch border.
- Sint-Truiden and Tongeren: the south, with agri-food and fruit growing in Haspengouw, and many small builders and installers.
Who to call and what to ask
In most Limburg firms with fewer than 50 employees, the owner or managing director decides. In metalworking, also ask for the production manager or the person who plans the workshop; in logistics, the operations manager; in construction, the owner or the site or project manager. Larger plants have a purchasing department, but even there the plant manager often has a say.
Questions that fit Limburg:
- How full is your order book for the coming months?
- Where do you lose the most time between an order and delivery?
- Which tasks do you still do by hand that you would like to stop doing?
- Are you hiring at the moment, and is it working?
- Who do you work with today for this, and since when?
Keep the script short and concrete. Our guide on writing a cold calling script shows how to build one around questions like these.
Calling in Limburg: practical notes
- Language. Call in Dutch. Limburg firms that trade with the Netherlands, Wallonia or Germany may switch to English or French with customers; follow the language of the person who answers.
- Directness. Owners appreciate a clear reason for the call and a concrete next step. Long introductions lose them.
- Voka Limburg. Voka Limburg is the provincial chamber of commerce and one of six Voka chambers in Flanders that together unite more than 18,000 businesses. Its events are where Limburg owners meet; go to listen and learn what is on their minds.
- UNIZO Limburg serves smaller firms and the self-employed, which covers much of the building trade.
- Timing. Builders and workshop owners are easiest to reach early in the morning, before they go on site, or at the end of the afternoon.
- Rules. Calling businesses is allowed in Belgium, but first check your numbers against the Bel-me-niet-meer list, which also covers business numbers, and honour every objection. See our summary of the cold calling rules in Belgium and the Netherlands; it is general information, not legal advice.
A first week of calling in Limburg
- Day 1: one list. For example 120 metalworking firms around Genk and Lommel, or 150 builders and installers in the south. Keep segments apart.
- Day 2: a short script. One sentence on why you call, two questions about their work, one ask.
- Days 3 and 4: early calling blocks from 7.30 to 9.00, and a second block late in the afternoon.
- Day 5: follow-up. Call back everyone who asked you to, send what you promised, and plan the next attempt for those you missed.
Most meetings come from the second or third conversation, so read our guide to sales follow-up. To see how a calling block looks in Ringlane, open the demo.
